| Firewise A program to help reduce wildfire risks within the rural/suburban interface. South Centré Corridors focused it's Firewise efforts within the "Waterford Landing" subdivision in Dinwiddie County. Landowners were educated on the many practices that can reduce wildfire risks. Most importantly thinning of fuel wood around homes. Brush was stockpiled then chipped with a chipper supplied by the RC&D. | |||

Bio-energy Development An effort to promote the use of Bio-fuels such as bio-diesel. It is the goal of the Council to increase the production and use of bio-diesel. In turn, this will have a positive effect on farm income. Specific plans are for a series of workshops to illustrate the process for converting waste cooking oil to bio-diesel. |

Nottoway River Recreation Development Recognized as a state scenic river, this waterway winds its way throughout the RC&D area. A river corridor that helped spawn our name. As wonderful as this river is, and highly touted for it's diversity of fish, it still lacks much-needed public access. Efforts are underway to develop this resource as a paddle-friendly "Blueway." |

Well-Capping/Groundwater Protection
To preserve the quality of
our
groundwater for future generations, the Council has a priority of
promoting the proper filling and capping of old and abandoned
wells. Those old wells are a potential contamination source as well
as a severe safety hazard. Currently, the Council is partnering with
the Sussex County Service Authority to conduct a "Wellhead" study to
determine the zones of impact around pubic wells in that County.
